Snam has always believed in the pivotal role of hydrogen in the transition towards a greener energy economy. Snam has committed to invest in hydrogen-related technologies and to adapt its assets and infrastructure to the new energy vector

Snam holds key roles in the main world associations dedicated to hydrogen:

  • Member of the Hydrogen Council

  • Chair and spokesperson positions in Hydrogen Europe
    and participation to its Technical Committees

  • Vice presidency of the Italian Hydrogen and Fuel Cell
    Association (H2IT)

Snam acquired technological know-how for the delivery of hydrogen-related projects through the stakes of ITM Power and Industrie De Nora

In 2019 Snam created a dedicated business unit, which currently includes 50+ professionals in the sector and that will manage the Hydrogen Innovation Center and the HyAccelerator initiatives

H2NG test in pipeline 10% Hydrogen mixture

H2NG TEST IN PIPELINE

December 2019

Snam has been the first company in Europe to successfully test the introduction of hydrogen in its transportation pipeline, with a 10% hydrogen mixture. H2NG was successfully supplied to two Italian industrial companies in the Contursi Terme area: a pasta factory and a water bottling company

Snam has successfully tested with Baker Hughes the world’s first “hybrid” hydrogen turbine designed for a gas network, in Florence. The turbine will be installed by the end of 2021 at Snam’s compressor station of Istrana, Italy

Snam acquired 33% of De Nora, a global leader in alkaline electrodes, collaborating with fuel cell operators. The company also holds a 34% stake in ThyssenKrupp Uhde Chlorine Engineers (TKUCE), a joint venture with ThyssenKrupp, amongst the world leaders in AWE

The ‘Divina’ project (Decarbonisation of the Glass Industry: Hydrogen and New Equipment), co-ordinated by Snam, RINA and Bormioli, aims to reduce emissions in the glass melting stage, which accounts for more than 50% of total energy consumption throughout the production process
