Decarbonization Nexus Challenge
The Decarbonation Nexus Challenge recognized five international startups as winners from over 50 applications received. The winners showcased their technology in Milan during the Snam Innovation Day – Evolving Horizons on November 8th , 2024
The winners
Snam awarded as winners, the Dutch Elestor BV (hydrogen flow-batteries), the German Reverion (Reversible SOEC), the Swedish TerraBarrier (coating to prevent hydrogen embrittlement), the French startup Sakowin Green Energy (Methane pyrolysis), and the American Graphitic Energy (previously named C-Zero) (Methane pyrolysis), which have undertaken an acceleration program. Furthermore, TerraBarrier received “The Special Prize Tech of the Future” mention and is included in an R&D program in collaboration with Cubogas, Snam’s associated company.
The acceleration pathway
Five startups were selected as winners for the program, which is divided into two stages.
- The first stage, a two-month Discovery Phase, allowed Snam to better understand the startups’ teams and technologies.
- Only three startups advanced to the four-month Validation Phase, during which a prefeasibility study of the technology proposed was conducted, to analyze its potential application in a relevant industrial environment.
- For the startups Elestor and Reverion, the focus was on long-duration energy storage application and the potential to connect their technology to a hydrogen pipeline. Snam is currently analyzing possible configurations to test these innovative solutions in an industrial ecosystem.
- Meanwhile, with TerraBarrier, we are continuing our collaboration with Cubogas to apply their coating on components such as pistons, valves, and heat exchangers to prevent hydrogen permeation, corrosion, and embrittlement on hydrogen components.
